Mentor Roles and Responsibilities

Mentors/Investigators plays a critical role in the success of the START-MH Program.
  • Mentors will establish and maintain a relationship with the trainee regarding overall functioning and performance level.
  • Mentors will provide the equivalent of a job description, including expectations of the trainee.
  • Mentors will meet with trainees on a regular basis to track progress of the research project.
  • Mentors will design a research project for trainees that can be accomplished in 9-10 weeks and develop a timeline to ensure the completion of the project. The project should be appropriate to the trainee’s level of experience and relevant to the mentor’s area of expertise.
  • Mentors should contact students in advance of the fellowship to discuss the research project. Mentors may also choose to send necessary materials to trainees to prepare them for the research project.
  • Mentors will assist trainees with the preparation of an abstract on their research findings. Mentors will also assist trainees in preparing a poster to be presented at a START-MH conference held the first weekend of August. (START-MH will provide fellows funding to attend the conference.)
  • Mentors will complete a final evaluation of trainee's performance and experience at the end of the training period.
  • Mentors will be available to trainees after the student returns to their home institution, to assist with completion of the research project, if necessary.
